State of the Union or Presidential Graffiti

January 29, 2008 -- I have never needed to wait for President Bush to give his State of the Union address to understand the condition of the nation. Still, I suffer through it every year and dutifully waited for it this year; trying my best to listen.

I rarely fall asleep before midnight, but listening to Bush last night, I was drifting by 9:15 pm. My slumber was not sound; it was that frustrating state of half-sleep.   The President’s speech was like white noise playing in the background, with the word “veto” jolting me back to alertness on too many occasions.

For those who were counting the “veto” alarms, my nap must seem like a nightmare. That was not the end of it though; I later woke up to a woman’s voice and thought it was Pelosi. She did sound composed and did make sense, but, a la Pelosi, there was this total lack of sincerity. Later I found out that she was some governor and not at all Pelosi; why does the Democratic leadership all sound the same?

Finally I was able to shut it down and fall asleep, but woke up again at 2:00am not knowing what to do. Should I bother writing this I wondered?  Our nation is a mess, and even though an increasing number of Americans know it, far too many still don’t seem to care.  I decided it’s no time to remain silent, and conceded the silence may be a luxury for many years to come.

On the one hand, we have a president who has lost all credibility with the American people and the rest of the world, a lame duck since the day he was re-elected, a leader who only governs by ruses and manipulations that no longer work, and who, since the Democrats took control of the Congress, discovered the power of his veto. He seemed amused with this new discovery and at every opportunity in his speech he would let the “VETO” bomb fly; not that different from a gang member marking his territory or a dog’s encounter with a fire hydrant.

On the other hand, we have the skid-marked Democrats, biding their time, trying not to stir too much dust, hoping the mad man would just live out his last days while the country can still be called a country. They seem to think that doing nothing grants them the right to govern.

They are waiting their turn in 2008, not planning to take the nation in a different direction.  It will be the same course; the scenery might just be a bit more pleasant!  If you dig deep you’ll discover there is no remarkable difference between the Democrats and Republicans that will most likely steal the next election.  You don’t think your vote really counts do you?

Clearly, the democratic so-called leadership really doesn’t disagree with Bush on the objectives; otherwise they would have done something about it by now. They only disagree with his methods.

To sum up the last seven years and what to expect in the future: Bush has enraged the world and the American people while the Democrats will only antagonize. Either way, Democrat or Republican, rape is rape.  Whether you use KY lubricate isn’t really a mitigating factor.
